ARGI is committed to our clients, our fellow team members and our community. Recently, our company established an employee governed program, ARGI Gives. Through this program we hope to improve the lives of other members of our local communities by sharing our time and talents.
Each quarter the committee selects a group service day to volunteer by providing support and manpower to local nonprofits and charitable organizations. With the recognition of Memorial Day and Independence Day fresh on our minds, ARGI Gives chose to spend the spring volunteer day by helping a local organization serving the needs of military veterans- Active Heroes.
Active Heroes is a Louisville nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen active duty military, veterans, and their families in order to provide the coping skills to manage the stress and the triggering points that lead to military suicide. The nonprofit is working towards reducing the number of veteran suicide with four programs: The Active Heroes Retreat Center, the Active Heroes Community Center, Active Challenges and Home Repairs.
After researching the organization, Taylor Russ, a member of ARGI Gives, reached out to see what we could do to help. As it turns out, Active Heroes needed some helping hands before their first Cabin Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Military Retreat Center. Over the course of two days, ARGI employees helped clean, weed eat, and landscape the areas around this first cabin.
“We were put to work as soon as we arrived,” explained Russ. “There was a lot of work to be done and little time to waste! An old barn on their land was just torn down, and we needed to clear out all of the old lumber before the ribbon cutting.
Throughout the day, we learned some incredible facts about veterans and military suicide. Our leader had us hold our breath for 22 seconds. He then let us know that each day 22 veterans take their own life- that number is staggering. It was a moment of silence in nature to be thankful for the service they have provided and also to honor their lives.”
The Active Heroes Retreat Center is the first retreat in America designed by military families to help military families heal. The retreat center is located in Shepherdsville, KY and open to military families free of charge. Visitors can schedule a day to visit the grounds during hours of staffing, schedule a cabin vacation or sign up for selected camping dates with cookouts.
“I was so thankful that we were able to help an organization that is trying to reduce that number, “ Russ included.
Active Heroes is a 501(c)(3) charity with national programs assisting veterans and military families with a vision to end veteran suicide. The organization has developed a national resource map on its website where veterans, military families and supporters can connect and help one another. Active Heroes also coordinates activities across America for veterans, military families and supporters. These physically and mentally challenging activities focus on connecting veterans and their families, with efforts to get them active and help reduce stress to eliminate veteran suicide.
